Creative Tech, Physical Computing & Robotics

Use microcontrollers, basic electronics, and custom sensors to create responsive physical objects, interactive robots, and custom electronic instruments.

The Framework:

Iterative Discovery

The Spark of Experimentation:

In working with technology or making music, unexpected results are inevitable. A line of code breaks, or an audio clip loops back unexpectedly. Instead of simply seeing these as frustrating errors, we can treat them as unexpected sparks that invite curiosity and exploration.

Decoding the Error:

This is where technical literacy is truly forged. When an error occurs, we pause to deconstruct it. Why did the script crash? What frequencies caused that digital clipping? By analyzing the system's behavior, students learn to understand the underlying mechanics of the tools they are using, shifting from passive consumers to active problem solvers and empowered creators.

The Power of the Loop:

True mastery comes from the willingness to iterate. Students learn to refine their projects step by step—debugging a block of JavaScript code, fine-tuning an audio EQ, or resoldering a circuit. This iterative process builds deep, durable resilience, proving that creative breakthroughs are the result of structured experimentation.

Meet Your Instructor

EDUCATOR, MUSICIAN & CREATIVE TECHNOLOGIST

Kyle McCarthy

For over nine years, I have served as a professional educator in premier private schools in Los Angeles, including New Roads School and Laurence School. Throughout my tenure developing specialized curricula across music production, computer science, and robotics, I realized that traditional classroom constraints often limit true experimentation and hinder authentic creative expression. Waves & Wires was born out of a desire to break past those institutional walls and bring tailored, high-fidelity instruction directly to the next generation of artists, makers, and creators.

As an alumnus of CalArts (BFA 2015, MFA 2017), my personal work thrives at the intersection of creative expression and technical execution—from engineering custom digital musical instruments and dynamic visual media to designing bespoke electronic tools and interactive sound environments. I don't just teach these systems; I actively use them to build, code, and perform. My dual background as both a seasoned institutional educator and a working creative technologist allows me to meet students exactly where they are, guiding them as they transform from passive technology users into capable digital innovators.

Remote Instruction

Available to students anywhere in the world, this model utilizes high-fidelity, low-latency audio streaming and interactive screen-sharing tools to deliver a seamless digital studio experience. Remote sessions are highly focused on software-driven disciplines—including JavaScript coding, advanced digital audio workstation (DAW) production, synthesis, and creative digital media design.

For students based on Maui, the mentorship comes directly to your home or learning pod. This in-person model is fully equipped with specialized hardware, microcontrollers, physical computing gear, and musical instruments. It is designed for deep, hands-on collaboration, transforming your physical space into an active creative technology lab or recording studio.
